THE NATURE OF POST-WAR RETAIL COMPETITION

"Our enormously productive economy...demands that we make consumption our way of life. That we concert the buying and use of goods into rituals...thta we seek our spiritual satisfaction, our ego satisfaction in consumption. We need things consumed, burned up, replaced and discarded at an ever accelerating rate..."
Viktor Lebow, retailing analyst
1955

This quote by Viktor Lebow gives us an insight into what the nature of post-war retail competition was like...irrational determining prices of goods on sales, evaluating inhuman means to respond to competion, influencing customers and their behaviours...that was the moment the capitalist movement started showing signs that it is necessarily in conflict with social morale.

Fancy that we still embrace capitalism inspite of being most ruthlessly victimised by it ...However, a few have started to debate on whether capitalism should be a way of life or not... watch the story of stuff which helps trigger thought process...
